Early Speculations
The final form of my main portfolio work is still a mistery for me. Last year I did the diploma in creative computing at CCI, where I learned the basics of coding and digital technology. This kick-started a big interest for code and music computing, inspiring me to do my main portfolio work related to these technologies. At the same time I’m a big enthusiast of synthesis and electronic instruments, leading me to research the field deeply and collect some instruments of my own. In an intent to combine these two passions of mine, I want to create a digital instrument for my main portfolio work.
What I mean by the final form of my work is that because of the flexible nature of digital technology and the vast amount of tools available, my digital instrument could be done in various formats, for example:
– A Max MSP device.
– An interactive website.
– Stand alone desktop application.
– Set of compositions (created using the instrument).
Nevertheless the form of my instrument, I want it to be free to download (or use) and completely open source. This with the purpose of being an accessible tool for people to use and research upon.
My project will be a practice based research, where I will learn about the subject both technically and conceptually, producing a piece of work as an outcome of the research. For the creation of my instrument I want to use some of the methodology’s used in the creation of early experimental music, specifically the type used in technological experimentation. At the same time I wan’t my instrument to operate using machine learning technology. This will be in a way complementing my dissertation project, as I will explore some of the same concepts. My dissertation will be about the links between post war experimental music, and current experiments with AI in music. In a way this project will create a tool that exemplifies the outcomes of my research project.
